Minimalism. That terrifying word. I think when people hear “minimalist” they imagine a lonely hippie with a mattress on the floor and a wilting pot plant for a best friend. But it doesn’t have to be like that. Minimalistic living can actually be liberating, rewarding and a massive stress relief. Think of your life as being permanently spring-cleaned. Sounds heavenly, right?
So when I embarked on my first backpacking adventure, I did so with barely 7 kilos of luggage. THAT’S RIGHT. 7 KILOS.It can be done, my friends. When it gets down to it, you really don’t need that much stuff. So here are 5 reasons why you should pack like a minimalist…
1) It will save you HEAPS of money
Ain’t nobody got time for luggage fees. Seriously. If you can cram all of your belongings into a carry-on, you’ll be saving yourself heaps of pennies along the way. This will make your life particularly less stressful when catching any internal flights. Say goodbye to sneaky luggage fees, now you’ve got the $$ for real tourist stuff.
2) … And time
Not only will you be the one strolling past the luggage carousel and straight into the caress of their bed after a long flight; but you’ll be saving time throughout the whole travelling process. Who’s got time for waking up early before a flight to get their shit packed?! NOT YOU. That’s 45 potential minutes you could be snoozing. All you’ve gotta do is roll up your stuff into a backpack and BAM you’re ready to go. I just added hours, if not days, back onto your life. YOU’RE WELCOME.
3) More room for buying cool stuff!
Now that you’ve got some extra space, you can go crazy with market finds and any unique items you come across throughout your travels. You will even be giving back to the local economy, you good human, you. #conscioustravel
4) Easier to carry
Let’s face it, the sweaty, my “shoulder is about to dislocate” look isn’t cute. With just a backpack, you can say goodbye to hauling 40 kilos of excess junk around with you and embrace the 7 kilo life. Or as I like to call it, the free life.
5) NO MORE STRESS
So this one goes without saying, but just think about all of the stress you’ll be saving yourself along the way. All of your valuables will be neatly tucked away in one apartment. You will no longer have to deadlift your suitcase onto the holding rails of trains and buses. You won’t even have to lug it through any crowds! Less stuff = less stress.
Did this post convince you to travel light? Are you a minimalist when it comes to travelling or the type of person who holds up the luggage queue for going over their allowance?
